#1789: Cintan Mi Segera Mmm… Perisa Ayam Cendawan

$

The onslaught of Malaysian varieties continues! This is yet another I got on last year’s trip to Penang, Malaysia. If you’re wondering what Ayam Cendawan means, basically it’s chicken mushroom. My wife Kit really likes mushrooms, so I thought I’d make this one for her today. Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains seafood. To prepare, add noodles to 360ml boiling water (note – the amount of time isn’t listed so I’ll do the standard 3 minutes. Add in contents of sachet. Stir and enjoy!

The baggage gandlers were pretty mean to this one!

The soup base sachet.

Indeed has a kind of chicken and mushroom scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added bard boiled egg and baked chicken. The noodles came out pretty well – standard gauge and chew to them. The broth is pretty good too – has a definite salty chicken flavor but with a mild mushroom flavor. Not overwhelming; just right. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 025296913056.

#1812: Master Kong Mushroom Instant Noodle

There’s a new Asian Food Center on 130th & Aurora – went there hunting for some of the fruit I got to try in Thailand and found mangosteen – and quite a few instant noodle varieties, this being one of them. It’s pretty far and few between that I find Master Kong varieties – always kind of a treat! I want to thank Bobby Y. from Canada for help in translation on this one! Let’s have a look at this one from China!

Detail of the side panel (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add sachets to cup and boiling water to fill line. Steep for 3-4 minutes, covered. Stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click image to enlarge).

An included fork!

The noodle block.

The dry soup base.

Has a mushroom scent.

A liquid sachet.

Has a kind of meaty scent.

The vegetables sachet.

A large amount of diverse vegetables.

Finished (click image to enlarge). The noodles are hydrated to a T – just right with a nice gauge and chewiness. High quantity as well. The broth is a thick and hearty mushroom gravy kind of thing which works immensely well with the vegetables, which are full of mushrooms that hydrated very nicely – even the peas came out great. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873032655.

Hooray! A box arrived today! I haven’t gotten one that I’ve had to sign for in a while. I’ve had a bag of instant noodles set aside for our postman and was able to hook him up – it’s great – when he comes to the door, he always says ‘more instant noodles!’ Let’s see what’s inside!

Hey cool – a Nissin Singapore t-shirt! Nissin SG makes Myojo products.

Never reviewed a mee poh or char mee variety before – sounds good – and it’s been ages since I’ve had a chicken abalone!

Some bowl varieties.

Some samples of the Myojo La Ramen line – spicy Mushroom and Spicy Lobster!

This poor Cup Noodles got beat up a little but I’ll be able to help it out once I open it. This is Kyushu White.

Finally, they sent along a couple of these neat erasers! Thanks!

Meet The Manufacturer: #1877: Myojo La Ramen Spicy Mushroom Flavour

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the spicy stuff. Also it should be known though that I’m not usually a big fan of mushrooms. I will try anything and everything I can get my hands on though – and in the last year or so, I’ve been finding mushrooms a bit more to my liking. My fingers are crossed for this one! Let’s check it out.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add everything to 550ml boiling water and cook for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

A soup base powder sachet.

Has a spicy scent along with a mushroom scent.

The garnish sachet.

A nice little mixture.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Chinese sausage, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and spring onion. The noodles had a great gauge and chew to them – I was really impressed. As for the broth, I expected that with the 550ml of water called for it’d be more watery, but it does indeed have a nice body to it. It has a great spiciness and mushroom taste, but it’s not overwhelmingly ‘generic mushroom’ flavor, rather a kind of creaminess is going on with excellent notes of mushroom. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 8888107002057.

I tried the spicy mushroom pack version a few days ago and really liked it – I usually am not a fan of mushrooms, but the flavor in that one was really quite enjoyable. Today it’s the bowl version – how will it fare? Let’s have a look!

Detail from the side panels (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add contents of sachets to bowl and boiling water to fill line. cover for 4 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click to enlarge).

The noodle block.

A seasoning sachet.

Has a spicy mushroom scent.

The garnish sachet.

Mushroom, carrot, spring onion and chilli.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and ito togarashi (pepper strands). The noodles have a great chew and gauge – a little thicker and chewier with a round shape. The broth has a rich flavor and good spiciness – not too mushroom, but just enough. The vegetables bits hydrated nicely and added a nice bonus. 4.56 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8888107002088.

#1913: Thai Smile Mushroom Rice Noodle Soup Bowl

The last of the stuff I found at BigLots! a while back. BigLots! is a kind of clearance/liquidation chain. What I like is that I usually find something or other in there that I’ve never heard of or reviewed before which is nice. Let’s have a look at this rice noodle bowl.

Detail of the bottom of the cardboard outer wraps (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add in sachet contents and boiling water to fill line. Cover for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The rice noodles – plentiful and short.

A large dry seasoning sachet.

A lot of powder and flecks of vegetable.

An oil sachet.

Rice bran oil and garlic.

A vegetable sachet.

Looks like some green onion and other stuff with mushroom bits.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion and star anise. The rice noodles didn’t hydrate as well as they should have in the 3 minutes called for; they were quite tough. After a minute or so longer however they got softer. The flavor was this oddly sweet kind of thing; it didn’t scream mushroom taste to me. The supplied bits of vegetable hydrated well, except the mushroom which were like hard pieces of wood. 0.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8850578954012.

#2065: Four Seas Kung Tak Lam Vegetarian Noodle (Mushroom)

I had a bit of trouble figuring out what this variety was called – until I scanned the back of the package and noticed it on the top left corner. This is one that I received from Apple Daily of Hong Kong for a special news feature. Kung Tak Lam is a popular vegetarian restaurant in Hong Kong. Let’s crack it open and give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add package contents to 600ml boiling water and cook for 4 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base powder.

A granular mixture.

The sauce sachet.

Methinks I see mushrooms.

The vegetables sachet.

A very nice varied mix of vegetables.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added tofu puff, spring onion and Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts. The noodles have a good gauge and chew to them – a skosh larger than the baseline instant. The broth is a light one, with a mushroom taste throughout. It’s kind of what you would call a delicate flavor – and not salty, however it has a nice oil to it. The supplied vegetables hydrated very well – especially the little pieces of mushroom. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 4892616015815.

Meet The Manufacturer: #2079: Nissin Nupasta Carbonara Flavour Instant Noodle

Well this looks interesting – Italian inspired pasta in a take out box style package. Reminds me of the Cup Noodles Pasta Style from Japan a reviewed before – at least in color scheme and design on the package. It looks like it stops there though! Let’s see what we’ve got here!

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains chicken and pork. To prepare, remove lid and add in contents of clear sachets. Add cold water to fill line. Microwave at 700W for 6 minutes, 30 seconds (use this tool to convert for your microwave). Add in contents of green sachet. Stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click to enlarge).

The noodle block.

The first of two garnish sachets.

Bacon is mentioned in the ingredients.

The second garnish sachet.

I did mention bacon, right? Mushrooms too!

The powder sachet.

Has a nice cheese scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). I’ll be honest; after converting the cold water instructions from 800W to 1100W microwaving, I was a little worried that 4 minutes and 20 second in hour microwave would pretty much obliterate this stuff. Fortunately, I was absolutely wrong. The noodles came out very, very well. They have a very fresh quality to them and a decent quantity. The vegetables and meats hydrated and cooked great – little bits of bacon, mushroom and other stuff throughout. The flavor was just great too – the white powder turned into a sauce with perfect thickness and quantity – and it tasted like an alfredo sauce. This was just plain awesome. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 4897878660018.

#2130: Kang Shi Fu Artificial Salted Beef With Mushrooms Flavour

Here’s another one sent by reader Colin – thanks again! Salted beef? This is new to me; it just makes me think of beef jerky, but I know that’s probably way off the mark. Let’s see how this one taste.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add package contents to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy! NOTE: this is the method I’ve used for pretty much all of the Master Kong/Kang Shi Fu variants as the package never have instructions for a cooking method; not even this one in English.

The noodle block took some hits during shipping.

The dry soup base.

Very light powder.

The paste sachet.

Very thick.

The vegetables sachet.

A nice little mixture.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, beef for hot pot coriander and star anise. The noodles were very thin and light on the chew. Pretty good though. The broth was great – lots of oiliness and beef flavor going on – really good! The vegetables hydrated but weren’t amazing. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6166390966686.

#2157: Master Kong Artificial Mushroom Chicken Flavor Instant Noodle

Here’s one sent to me by Colin – thanks again! So these have been a real conundrum for me for quite a long time. The little chef on the logo is definitely different from the regular Master Kong chef, but I can’t get to the bottom of the exact name of this brand and so it’s Master Kong?

I dunno – I’ve gotten hold of the distributor via the phone number on the back of the package but really haven’t gotten a straight answer. If anyone’s in New York – check this place out perhaps? Would love to straighten it out once and for all. Anyways, mushroom chicken. Let’s do this!

Detail of the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. The package doesn’t list an exact amount of water to use, so as with other Master Kong varieties I’ve reviewed, 500ml will be used. Add everything into a bowl and add 500ml boiling water. Cover for 4 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block. – a very large one.

Dry soup base powder.

Such a light powder than when I puored it out, there was almost a vapor coming from it.

The paste base.

A thick concoction.

The vegetables sachet.

Cabbage, carrot and onion.

Finished (click to enlarge). A lot of noodles – and they’re pretty good. The broth has a nice chicken mushroom taste and has a good oiliness to it as well – nice and hearty. The vegetables hydrated well enough. A nice bowl of chicken mushroom noodles. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6909146402393.

Walked to get the mail today and the mailman gave me this box. Wasn’t sure what it was and then remembered! Nissin Thailand has a line of Winnie The Pooh themed noodles I saw a few times on instagram. I asked my contact Ms. Janenate about getting some samples and here they are! You might remember her name from the Nissin Thailand Meet The Manufacturer (check it out here). The neat little cups have little Winnie The Pooh fishcake in them! Let’s look inside!

Here’s another one sent by a reader named Colin – thanks again! Today, I thought I’d cook up something for my wife Kit. Her actual name is Christine, but I’ve called her Kit for years. She’s always been a big fan of mushrooms – in fact, it’s because of her that I’ve started to like them. Oddly, here’s a Maruchan instant noodle I’ve not reviewed yet. I didn’t even know it still existed til Colin sent it over. Let’s have a look at this one.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free. To prepare, boil 2 cups of water and add noodle block for 3 minutes. Add in contents of sachet. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Smells lightly mushroomy.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added mushrooms and processed cheese. The noodles are your standard Maruchan ramen noodle – nice squarish shape, standard instant gauge and a nice comforty chew. The broth has flavor!@ So often, mushroom broth just seems more on the bland end. This one tastes kind of like it should be as a side dish. One of the most American tasting instant noodles I’ve experience. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 041789002151.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Vegan.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added beef and sliced white mushrooms sauteed in soy sauce. The noodles again have a nice gauge and agreeable chewiness. The flavor is very light on this one – also not very spicy at all compared to the others. Little bits and pieces of button mushrooms can be found throughout the noodles, along with other nice bits of veggies. This was pretty good stuff – and I’m generally not a big fan of fungi! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 782733015055.

I’ve always found these quite interesting. Why? Well for starters, they seem to always have a pack of seaweed with them, and not a small one but a decent portion. Also, the noodle blocks are unique as well. How? Well, read on and you’ll see. This one is from Hong Kong – let’s check it out!

Here’s the distributor / import sticker. Looks to be meat free but check for yourself.

Here is detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). To prepare, empty sachets into bowl, add boiling water to line, steep for 4 minutes, stir and enjoy.

Here’s detail of the lid (click image to enlarge).

So what’s the hubbub about the noodle block? The fact that there are two of them! I’ve never seen this elsewhere – lots and lots of noodles in this one!

The powder soup base sachet.

A very fine powder.

The paste sachet.

Has a nice artificial beef scent.

The other unique thing about these bowls are the seaweed sachets.

That’s quite a bit of seaweed there!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added beef and sweet onions as well as a dash of Urashima Sesame & Salt furikake. The noodles have a very familiar instant noodle gauge – kind of squareish. Decent consistency although very light. The broth has a very good flavor, and although not extremely hot or spicy, is full and good. The seaweed is everywhere and works well. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.
